Stanislav Grof (Stanislav Grof, race. July 1, 1931 in Prague, Czechoslovakia) - Czech-American psychiatrist and psychologist, MD, founder of Transpersonal Psychology, one of the pioneers in the study of altered states of consciousness for the treatment of growth and self-rights.

Based on studies related to the influence of the drug LSD in human consciousness, Grof identified the following 4 areas of the psyche:
1. sensory threshold;
2. individual unconscious;
3. Region of birth and death (perinatal level);
4. transpersonal level.
Grof argues that the current popular conception of human psychology (eg, Freud's theory) usually do not take into account all these levels, and therefore not able to describe a person in general, although they have used and confirmed in some context. Based on its research and similar Grof laid the foundations of the pre-and perinatal psychology, which eventually evolved into a comprehensive picture of the human psyche. In this theory, he linked the model complex psychological phenomenon and a man with his prenatal and postnatal experiences. Continued study of altered states of consciousness after the prohibition of LSD in the late 1960s led (along with his wife) to the discovery of techniques "Holotropic Breathing" - an instrument of self-knowledge and treatment.
He graduated from Charles University Prague in 1957. In 1965 he defended the thesis of Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, at the time - a practicing psychoanalyst. In 1967-1969 was a two-year internship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA. As research director continued to work at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center. From 1973 to 1987 he lived and worked in the institute, "Esalen" in California, USA. In 1977 founded the International Transpersonal Association. At present - Professor of Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies.
